LENINSKOYE, Russian Far East, August 27 (Itar-Tass) - Damage inflicted by unprecedented floods on the Jewish autonomous region, a constituent territory in the Far East of Russia, may reach 4 billion rubles, regional Governor Alexander Vinnikov said Tuesday.

“We’ve done an early estimation of the damage and it stands at 3.26 billion rubles at present,” Vladimir Puchkov, the federal Minister for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense told a process meeting Tuesday.

He indicated that the real damage might be calculated only after the waters over the overflowed local rivers subsided.

“It may climb to 4 billion rubles,” Vinnikov said in a remark on Puchkov’s words.

Alexander Frolov, the chief of Russia’s Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environment Monitoring said on his part the peak of the flooding was to be expected by the weekend.

“The peak of the water rise is expected August 29 in the Jewish autonomous area and the water will stay for five days, after which it will start subsiding,” he said.
