Ukrainian, Russian diplomats discuss incident at Sea of Azov

Two Ukrainian fishermen died and another two people went missing on July 17 when the Ukrainian small vessel run foal of the Russian coast-guard boat at the Sea of Azov

KIEV, July 18 (Itar-Tass) - Russian charge d’affairs Andrei Vorobyov met Ukrainian acting Deputy Foreign Minister Ruslan Demchenko on Thursday to discuss the incident at the Sea of Azov where a boat of the Russian Border Guard Service run foal of a Ukrainian small size vessel.

“Ukraine demands a thorough and objective investigation be conducted and measures be taken to avoid such incidents in the future,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported.

In response Russia expressed condolences over the incident as a result of which Ukrainian citizens died. Russia said it would take necessary measures to investigate the incident.

The Ukrainian consul-general in Rostov-on-Don has arrived on the spot in order to coordinate actions taken by the competent structures of Russia and Ukraine to investigate the incident, to search for missing Ukrainian citizens and provide aid to an injured people.

Two Ukrainian fishermen died and another two people went missing on July 17 when the Ukrainian small vessel run foal of the Russian coast-guard boat at the Sea of Azov near the Russian settlement of Vorontsovka. The Ukrainian State Border Guard Service said, “The vessels collided in the area of Dolzanskaya spit while chasing and manoeuvring. The fishing vessel overturned.”

One of the fishermen (a Ukrainian citizen) has been rescued. The bodies of another two fishermen have been found in the morning. The search for missing fishermen continues, the Border Guard Service reported.
