VLADIVOSTOK, January 23 (Itar-Tass) - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) near the coast of Hokkaido Island, the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.

The quake's focus was at a depth of 250 km beneath the seabed. The epicenter of the temblor was approximately 70 km southwest of the volcanic island of Rishiri inhabited by over 5,000 people.

There has been no information about the consequences of the earthquake.
