MOSCOW, January 13. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has reiterated in comment’s on Taiwan’s recent presidential election that Russia regards the island as an integral part of China.
"Russia's position on Taiwan is well-known, consistent and unchanging," the diplomat said in a statement.
She said the policy is enshrined in several treaties, for example in Article 5 of the Treaty on Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China of July 16, 2001.
In that clause, Russia "reaffirms the invariability of its principled position on the Taiwan issue, which is set forth in the political documents that were signed and adopted by the heads of both states between 1992 and 2000," she said.
Zakharova also quoted this excerpt from the clause: "The Russian side recognizes that there is only one China in the world, the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all of China, and Taiwan is an integral part of China. The Russian side opposes Taiwan's independence in any form.".
