Left-wing Russian political activist Udaltsov detained on charges of justifying terrorism
Moscow’s Basmanny Court is likely to choose a measure of pretrial restraint for Udaltsov on Friday, January 12
MOSCOW, January 11. /TASS/. Russian investigators detained Sergey Udaltsov, the coordinator of the Left Front political group, on charges of justifying terrorism, his lawyer Violetta Volkova has told TASS.
"The Investigative Committee detained Udaltsov under Article 92 of the Russian Code of Criminal Procedure. His is a suspect in a criminal case, opened [on charges stipulated by] Article 205.2 of the Russian Criminal Code (justification of terrorism)," the lawyer said.
She added that Moscow’s Basmanny Court is likely to choose a measure of pretrial restraint for Udaltsov on Friday, January 12. The activist faces up to seven years behind bars if found guilty.
In 2014, the Moscow City Court found Udaltsov guilty of organizing mass riots, charges to which he pled not guilty. He was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison, and was released from incarceration in August 2017.
