Rights commissioner seeks investigation of reports captured Russians are killed in Ukraine
Tatiana Moskalkova said one of the prisoners witnessed the murder of a fellow serviceman
MOSCOW, June 10. /TASS/. Russian human rights commissioner Tatiana Moskalkova on Friday said she had asked the Russian Investigative Committee to look into reports that Russian prisoners of war are killed and tortured in Ukraine.
"We are receiving complaints about inhumane treatment of Russian soldiers in captivity in Ukraine," she said on Telegram.
She said one of the prisoners witnessed the murder of a fellow serviceman. "In unbearable conditions, with a bag over his head, he was constantly subjected to humiliation, insults and severe beatings, which caused a fracture of his nose and other bodily injuries," the commissioner said.
"We asked the Investigative Committee of Russia to conduct a thorough investigation and restore justice," Moskalkova said.
On February 24 Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in response to a request for help by the heads of the Donbass republics. He stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories, but aims to demilitarize and de-Nazify the country. The Russian Defense Ministry said that Russian troops are not targeting Ukrainian cities, but are incapacitating Ukrainian military infrastructure.
