Alexey Navalny’s wife detained in Moscow for taking part in unsanctioned rally

MOSCOW, January 23. /TASS/. Police detained Alexey Navalny’s wife, Yulia, for participating in an unauthorized rally on Pushkin Square in downtown Moscow on Saturday, she wrote on Instagram posting a photo of herself in a police van.

Earlier, Alexey Navalny’s supporters posted calls on social media, urging to take part in unsanctioned rallies in his support on Saturday, January 23. The prosecutors and police issued a warning about liability for attending unauthorized rallies. The police pointed out that any attempts to hold unsanctioned public events as well as any provocations by their participants would be regarded as a threat to public order and would be immediately suppressed.

Navalny, who has been convicted twice for fraud, had been wanted for violating the terms of punishment in the Yves Rocher case. He was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport on Sunday upon arrival from Berlin. Moscow’s Khimki Court ruled he remanded in custody until February 15. On February 2, the court is scheduled to hear a motion of replacing his suspended sentence with a real one.
