Russia counting on sober thinking among American politicians, military brass, says envoy
The UN Security Council will hold a session on Friday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the situation in Syria
UN, April 13. /TASS/. Moscow expects that both American politicians and its military brass will use their best judgement and prevent any possible confrontation between Russia and the United States, said Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya on Rossiya 24 TV live on Friday.
"We expect some contacts to be taking place between the sides. We are banking on sober thinking among both American politicians and US military brass, who perfectly understand that the risk of a clash between the two superpowers really does exist," he said.
"I want to believe that we are further rather than closer [to a possible confrontation,] but we don’t know that," Nebenzya added.
The UN Security Council will hold a session on Friday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the situation in Syria and threats posed to Damascus by the US. The session was initiated by Russia.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump threatened to take military action against Syrian authorities over the alleged use of chemical agents in the town of Douma near Damascus. A number of NGOs, including the White Helmets, stated that chemical weapons were used in the Eastern Ghouta area on April 7. The Russian Foreign Ministry slammed this report as fake news. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the White Helmets are an unreliable source of information and are notorious for disseminating falsified material.
