Top prosecutor shows corruption in Russia caused losses of $2.5 bln over past three years
Only 60% of the damage was compensated, Yuri Chaika said
MOSCOW, December 8. /TASS/. Damage from corruption in Russia over the past three years amounted to more than 148 billion rubles ($2.5bln), Russian Prosecutor-General Yuri Chaika said in an interview with Kommersant business daily.
"The results of criminal cases’ investigation show that the damage caused by corruption-related crimes over the past two years and three quarters of this year totaled more than 148 billion rubles," Chaika said in an interview on occasion of the International Anti-Corruption Day marked on December 9.
Only 60% of the damage was compensated, he said.
Since 2014, some 122,000 corruption-related crimes have been registered in Russia.
Over the past three and a half years, more than 45,000 people have been sentenced for corruption, Chaika said. Among them were 4,500 staff members of law enforcement agencies, more than 400 lawmakers of regional and municipal level, and also almost 3,000 officials.
