Kremlin comments on Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli capital
The status of Jerusalem is one of the key issues of the Israeli-Palestinian crisis
MOSCOW, December 7. /TASS/. The Kremlin is concerned about Donald Trump’s decision to transfer the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, as it will aggravate the situation.
"Tensions that sparked in the region following US President [Donald] Trump’s statement arouse concerns," Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "We think that this decision is not helping advance, at least, in the Middle East settlement, but, on the contrary, as we can see, is leading to a split in the international community."
The Kremlin spokesman pointed to the fact that "not all agree with the US president’s decision; moreover, it caused a backlash in Ramallah and among Palestinians in general."
"So, we are still concerned," the Kremlin press secretary repeated.
"What should be done? It is necessary to search for solutions through political and diplomatic means, though the situation has aggravated considerably, for sure," Peskov stressed.
On Wednesday, Trump said that Jerusalem had been recognized as Israel’s capital and that the US embassy would be transferred there from Tel Aviv.
