Moscow looking at possible ways to respond to US’ actions against Russian media
The decision will be taken based on how the situation around the Russian mass media develops further, the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said
MOSCOW, November 9. /TASS/. Moscow is looking at possible ways of responding to Washington’s actions against the Russian mass media, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.
"As for possible ways and formats of response to the actions of US law enforcers, who are behind the attempts to squeeze the Russian mass media out of the United States, the decision will be taken based on how the situation around the Russian mass media develops further," she said. "We will take no unilateral steps to create obstacles for US journalists or journalists from any other country."
According to Zakharova, the Russian foreign ministry receives a lot of letters from Russian citizens and non-government organizations which express indignation at how Russia is pictured in the Western, first of all American, mass media. "We have never used our laws to impact via the administrative mechanism the activities of the US mass media," she stressed. "We have always thought that it is not right to use the administrative resource to counter fake, untrue information, that it should rather be done through building up information potential, providing more information."
"But as soon as the United States is seeking to use the entire potential of its law enforcement structures to stop the activities of a Russian television channel which is working on legal grounds and against which no actual evidence of illegal activities has been given, we will act in a tit-for-tat manner," she said. "We do it only as a response measure."
