Russian senator warns US withdrawal from talks on North Korea could be disastrous
Earlier, US Ambassador to the United Nations told CNN that the US does not "want to get back into the six-party talks"
MOSCOW, March 17. /TASS/. Washington’s refusal to take part in the six-party talks on North Korea’s nuclear program could be disastrous, Konstantin Kosachev, head of Russia’s Federation Council International Affairs Committee, said on Friday.
Earlier, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said in an interview with CNN that the US does not "want to get back into the six-party talks" involving South Korea, North Korea, the US, China, Japan and Russia. "We're not willing to do that. Been there, done that."
In comments to this statement, Kosachev voiced concerns over the attempts of the new US administration to solve the most important international issues, like on the Iranian and North Korean nuclear programs, with the use of "Cowboys’ outbursts."
"The consequences could be a disaster, especially when you deal with nuclear powers," the Russian senator stressed. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said earlier that it may be necessary to take pre-emptive military action against Pyongyang, acknowledging that the efforts to denuclearize North Korea over the past 20 years have failed to produce the desired result.
Kosachev said these statements could signal that politicians in charge of the US foreign policy are inexperienced rather than decisive. The senator recalled that the most important formats of cooperation between the key international actors were not created by the US and it should not destroy them.
"In this case, I wish these politicians become experienced and wise before they "mess things up" in the most challenging issues of the international agenda," he said.
