Kremlin agrees with Trump’s comments about ‘witch-hunt’ over contacts with Russian envoy
"After President Trump’s comprehensive definition, we have nothing to add," Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said
MOSCOW, March 3. /TASS/. The Kremlin thinks that US President Donald Trump’s assessment of the situation around the contacts of Russia’s Ambassador to Washington Sergei Kislyak and US Attorney General Jeff Sessions is comprehensive, Dmitry Peskov, the Russian presidential press secretary, told reporters on Friday.
Earlier, Trump called the situation ‘witch-hunt,’ Peskov said.
"After President Trump’s comprehensive definition, we have nothing to add," he said.
Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, "I can cite the media that say all this is very much reminiscent of a witch-hunt and the McCarthyism era which we all thought was long gone." Lavrov said.
On Wednesday, The Washington Post said that Jeff Sessions failed to make public his contacts with Russia’s ambassador in Washington in July and September last year, when Sessions was a senator from Alabama.
Department of Justice spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said Sessions had failed to mention his contacts with Kislyak because they were in no way linked with the election campaign. The Wall Street Journal says US investigators had looked into Sessions’ contacts with Russian officials during the election campaign in the United States, but the results of that inquiry, just as its time frame, remain unclear.
According to the daily, the probe was part of a sweeping investigation of likely contacts between members of the Trump election team with Russians under the surveillance of US counter-intelligence.
