Moscow supports de Mistura’s agenda for intra-Syrian talks in Geneva
The Russian Foreign Ministry says real progress towards settlement of the Syrian crisis is possible only if the intra-Syria dialogue involves the entire spectrum of the Syrian opposition
MOSCOW, February 28. /TASS/. Moscow supports the agenda of the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva that was proposed by United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, the Russian foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
The ministry made the statement after a series of consultations Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov had on the sidelines of the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva with the U.N. envoy, the Syrian government delegation led by Bashar al-Jaafari, leader of Syria’s opposition Movement for a Pluralistic Society Randa Kassis, and representatives of a number of European states.
"The sides exchanged views on all aspects of the Syrian settlement," the ministry said. "The Russian side reiterated its principled position on the Syrian political process. The Russian diplomat voiced support to the agenda of the talks on the basis of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254 that was proposed by de Mistura. At the same time, focus was made on the necessity to pay due attention during the talks to problems of anti-terrorism efforts as envisaged in Resolution 2254."
"It was noted that real progress towards settlement of the Syrian crisis is possible only if the intra-Syria dialogue involves the entire spectrum of the Syrian opposition," the ministry said.
