Russia expects US to support efforts against 'chemical terrorism' — diplomat
A Russian diplomat stressed the IS had gained an opportunity not only to use but also to produce chemical weapons on an industrial scale
GENEVA, February 21. /TASS/. Moscow expects Washington to show flexibility in combating chemical and biological terrorism, Russian envoy to the UN Office in Geneva Alexei Borodavkin told TASS on Tuesday.
When commenting on Russia taking over the chairmanship of the Conference on Disarmament, he said that the work on a Convention for combating chemical and biological terrorism could revitalize the Conference on Disarmament."
"Unfortunately, some countries, first and foremost, the United States, did not support us in this matter."
According to Borodavkin, the Convention is aimed at cutting off a channel for spreading weapons of mass destruction that have already begun to fall into the hands of non-governmental agencies and terrorists, which is far more dangerous," he added.
"Another goal is the war on terror which is the utmost foreign policy priority not only for Russia but also for the United States and other countries," he said.
"Taking into consideration the fact that the new US administration has declared the war on terror as its major foreign policy priority, we hope that the US will show more flexibility and willingness to cooperate in this field," the Russian envoy stressed.
The Russian diplomat went on to say that the IS (Islamic State, outlawed in Russia) had gained an opportunity not only to use but also to produce chemical weapons on an industrial scale.
"The question of drawing up such convention and facilitate the fight against international terrorists to prevent them from using biological and chemical weapons has become more pressing," the Russian envoy said. "Our proposal is still on the table, we plane to advance it as the Conference Chair."
