Foreign Ministry believes US tries to accuse Russia of its failures in Afghanistan
The ministry says US allegations that Russia is supplying weapons to the Taliban are seemingly geared to accuse Russia of their own failure
MOSCOW, February 10. /TASS/. Allegations voiced by the commander of the U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan that Russia is supplying weapons to the Taliban are seemingly geared to accuse Russia of their own failure in the Afghan affairs, the Russian foreign ministry said on Friday.
The Russian foreign ministry described the U.S. general’s allegations that Russia is supplying weapons to the Taliban to undermine the United States’ and NATO’s positions in Afghanistan as another "paroxysm of conspiracy theories."
"Admitting the frustrating security situation in Afghanistan, Nicholson asks Washington to increase the some-ten-thousand-strong American contingent in Afghanistan by several more thousand men in a hope to resolve the existing problems," the ministry said. "It looks like the general has forgotten that not long ago a 100,000-strong U.S. contingent was deployed in that country and it failed to improve the situation."
These groundless allegations were caught up by Senator John McCain, known for his Russophobic pronouncements, the ministry noted.
"It all looks like a futile attempt to accuse Russia of their own failures in the Afghan affairs," the ministry said. It may help score political points in certain circles in Washington but it will never help improve the woeful security situation in Afghanistan."
