Russia regrets that US, Ukraine oppose UN anti-Nazi resolution
The US and Ukraine voted against the Russian-initiated resolution while EU countries and a few other states abstained from voting
MOSCOW, December 20. /TASS/. Moscow regrets that the US and Ukraine have opposed the Russian-initiated resolution on combating the glorification of Nazism, adopted by the UN General Assembly, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"This initiative always receives wide support from various countries, the number of countries participating in drawing up this document shows that the memory of the tragic events of that war, of the horrors that Nazism had brought to the world, is still alive," the statement reads.
"This resolution is a clear signal to those countries where there is a need to take decisive measures aimed at combating the increased attempts to distort history and glorify Nazism," the Russian foreign ministry added.
Apart from Russia, another 55 UN member states participated in drawing up the resolution. A total of 136 countries voted in its favor, the US and Ukraine voted against the resolution while EU countries and a few other states abstained from voting.
Resolution’s main provisions
According to the Russian foreign ministry, the resolution condemns any attempts to glorify the Nazi movement and former members of the Waffen-SS particularly by erecting monuments in their honor as well as arranging public rallies in their support.
The resolution points to the inadmissibility of giving those who fought against the anti-Hitler coalition and cooperated with the Nazis the status of national heroes.
The Russian foreign ministry paid special attention to the provisions condemning the attempts to desecrate monuments dedicated to those who had fought against Nazism during World War II.
The resolution also expresses concern over the growing number of places that extremist, racist and xenophobic parties have received in some national and local assemblies as well as over the rise in racist outbursts during sporting events.
