Russian expert foresees Trump taking balanced approach to fulfilling campaign promises
An expert says Donald Trump’s electoral promises were encouraging
MOSCOW, November 21. /TASS/. US President-Elect Donald Trump will adopt a prudent and balanced approach to fulfilling his electoral promises, Director of the Institute for US and Canadian Studies of Russia’s Academy of Science Valery Garbuzov said.
"He offers extraordinary approaches to all global issues, but the question is if he would be able to implement them given the situation regarding Iran, China, Russia, NATO, as well as the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership," he elaborated.
"Trump has been assembling his incoming administration lately, but the time may come when he will begin to talk about these new approaches again," Garbuzov noted. "He will apparently tone down his positions and adopt more prudent and balanced stances. We need to have patience."
"Trump’s electoral promises were encouraging. But will they all be fully implemented and will the divisions be bridged, not to mention first and foremost, in assessing the forces active in Syria?" Garbuzov said adding that Russia and US "have been unable to come to terms on the situation in Syria." "Work needs to be done on overcoming differences. This is a matter for the future, though not soon," the Russian expert noted.
When touching upon Iran’s nuclear program, Garbuzov said that "if Trump targets the Iranian Nuclear Deal, that will complicate Washington’s relations with Moscow."
As for the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his outgoing US counterpart Barack Obama, that took place on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Peru’s capital of Lima, the Russian expert noted that it was "a very brief meeting, probably, the last for Obama as US president." "Obviously, no pressing issues were brought up at the meeting. The parties reiterated their concerns and differences that still linger," he explained. "No one had expected any decisive approaches to be adopted or agreements to be clinched at the meeting," Garbuzov concluded.
