Russian MP calls US, Ukraine’s stance on resolution condemning Nazism 'destructive'
The UN passed a resolution on the need to combat the glorification of Nazism and counter the contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination and xenophobia
MOSCOW, November 18. /TASS/. The position of the US and Ukraine on the resolution on the need to combat the glorification of Nazism and counter the contemporary forms of racism and xenophobia is destructive and came as no surprise, while its support by a vast majority countries is crucial for ensuring global security, members of Russia’s State Duma (lower house of parliament) said.
"The support of Russia’s draft resolution on the inadmissibility of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance and against the glorification of Nazism by the majority of the UN member-countries shows that responsible countries realize the degree of danger of these phenomena for our civilization," member of the State Duma International Affairs Committee, Sergei Zheleznyak, told reporters on Friday.
"At the same time, the destructive stance of the US and Ukraine on this resolution, unfortunately, came as no surprise," the politician added. According to Zheleznyak, "Kiev made radical nationalism its state ideology glorifying the participants in the punitive operations responsible for the deaths of thousands of citizens of Ukraine, Russia, Poland and other countries during WWII."
"Meanwhile, innocent people continue to die in the Donbass region because of artillery bombardments by the Ukrainian troops. The administration (of President Pyotr) Poroshenko takes no actions to end the armed conflict in Donbass sabotaging the implementation of the Minsk agreements," the lawmaker said, adding that the White House "continues to support the criminal regime in Kiev and invent accusations against Russia."
Resolution’s significance for global security
According to State Duma Deputy Speaker, Irina Yarovaya, the fact that the resolution proposed by Russia was supported by a great number of countries is an important factor in ensuring global security. "Countries’ concerted action and efforts at the UN to protect peace are essential for ensuring global security," she said.
The parliamentarian noted that "the memories of victims of Nazism and racism have always been sacred" for Russia. She added that "attempts to glorify or justify crimes and the ideology of anti-humanism in all its aspects are unacceptable."
The politician noted that Russia’s initiatives similar to this resolution "are very important, this is not just a reminder." "This is the policy of rapprochement and unification of all countries and peoples to stand up for the common humanitarian values," she emphasized. "When the countries, which voted against and abstained, abandon double standards and stop encouraging destructive and deadly technologies and paradigms, the world will avoid many upheavals and losses," the lawmaker added.
