Russian diplomat says Trump’s win no reason to ‘jump for joy’
The Russian diplomat hopes that the new US administration would facilitate restoring bilateral ties
MOSCOW, November 9. /TASS/. Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential elections is not a reason for Moscow to celebrate, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the national broadcaster NTV.
"We should remain sober and realize that he will defend Washington’s interests inside the country let alone abroad," she said. "We shouldn’t jump for joy. We should rather pursue our own policy and advance our own interests but of course, we should also try to find ways to revive bilateral relations."
The Russian diplomat expressed hope that the new US administration would facilitate restoring bilateral ties "deadlocked by the outgoing administration."
According to Zakharova, the Russian people have sympathy for Trump because they "reject the aggressive and totally destructive rhetoric" of the US authorities "which was stepped up during the election campaign."
According to the latest reports, Trump surpassed the 270-vote hurdle necessary to clinch the White House.
