Russian diplomat rejects Kiev reports on armed police mission in Donbass
The OSCE discussed allowing the members of the mission to carry weapons, but no consensus was reached on the issue
MOSCOW, October 27. /TASS/. The statements of Ukrainian politicians on the alleged agreement to deploy an armed police mission in Donbass are inconsistent with reality, Russian Foreign Ministry’s official spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters on Thursday.
The diplomat explained that at the summit of the Normandy Quartet (Russia, Ukraine, Germany, France) in Berlin on October 19 an agreement was reached on "organizing round-the-clock monitoring over the disengagement of forces and all sides on the contact line by the forces of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission."
The disengagement of sides in Donbass is carried out based on a framework agreement of the Contact Group reached on September 21, she said. "As of today, it has taken place in the settlements of Zolotoye and Petrovskoye. We expect that in the near future it will be in Stanitsa Luganskaya and then in new areas that we hope will be agreed by the sides."
"The OSCE SMM is monitoring this process, it has been working in Ukraine, including in Donbass, since March 2014," Zakharova said. "This is a civilian mission, its monitors are unarmed."
The OSCE discussed allowing the members of the mission to carry weapons for self-defense purposes and only at the areas of the disengagement of forces this summer, but no consensus was reached on the issue, she said, adding that Russia was not against the proposal.
