Russian State Duma speaker urges all countries to unite in fight against terrorism
Volodin said ensuring security is every state’s duty
MOSCOW, October 7. /TASS/. Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin on Friday pointed to the necessity to unite the efforts of all countries in the fight against international terrorism.
"If we speak about the operation in Syria, the fight against terrorism, the fight against evil is a question that worries both Russian residents and residents of other countries," Volodin said.
"Because the talk is about prevention of terrorist attacks in all countries. That is why it is necessary to unite here and combine efforts," he told journalists.
Volodin said ensuring security is the state’s duty. "And protection of security is a priority in the work of any politician, any state structure, that is why efforts should be united here," the lower house speaker said.
At the same time he underscored that it is necessary to proceed from the fact that Russia is a peace-loving country.
"We are doing everything to maintain peace," Volodin said.
Russia’s operation against the terrorist organizations Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra (now called Jabhat Fath al-Sham) in Syria started September 30, 2015 on a request from Syrian President Bashar Assad. With support from Russia’s aircraft, the Syrian government forces recaptured about 400 inhabited localities.
Serious damage was inflicted upon illegal oil trade; the key routes of delivery of weapons and ammunition to militants were blocked.
On March 14, 2016 Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered to withdraw the main part of the Russian Aerospace Forces’ air group from Syria. Two Russian military facilities - at the Hmeymim airfield and in Tartus keep operating on Syrian territory.
