Russian diplomat says women’s rights under threat amidst EU migration crisis
The Russian delegation says many of the OSCE's member states are failing to fully ensure women’s rights
WARSAW, September 28. /TASS/. The Russian delegation to the OSCE Human Dimension Implementation meeting said that many of the OSCE's member states are failing to fully ensure women’s rights amidst the migration crisis engulfing the EU.
"At present, the promotion and protection of women’s rights has turned into a serious challenge given the current migration crisis facing Europe. Not only are the social and economic aspects vital but also issues of security, physical safety and the right to a dignified life are as well. It is regrettable to see that not all countries are managing to cope with this challenge," the representative of Russia’s Ministry of Education and Science Ksenia Trinchenko said at the meeting.
"Close attention needs to be paid to combating psychological and physical violence against women both domestically and in the workplace, reducing the maternal mortality rate, improving women's reproductive health, assisting vulnerable groups of women that include not only migrant women, but also women from national minorities, indigenous peoples and those who are economically disadvantaged," Trinchenko stated.
"Only an integrated approach and joint efforts by the state, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations will enable us to advance towards genuine gender equality. That, in turn, is a more complicated and integrated process with a whole lot of pitfalls," Trinchenko noted.
"Equalizing statistical data by placing men and women in different categories is not a solution to the problem," the Russian official concluded.
