Russian Foreign Ministry: US should not use UN Security Council as site for PR-campaigns
A Russian diplomat comments on the statements by US Permanent Representative to the UN on the need to take measures in response to the use of chemical weapons in Syria
MOSCOW, August 31. /TASS/. It is unacceptable to use the UN Security Council as a site for PR-campaigns, including for some internal political goals, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.
The Russian diplomat commented on the statements by US Permanent Representative to the United Nations Samantha Power on the need to take measures in response to the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
"Unfortunately, the use-of-force scenarios in diplomacy, and diplomacy is precisely what the UN Security Council is doing, is a sign of impotence and is very dangerous as it leads to even greater degradation of the situation and we have seen all this," the Russian diplomat said.
"It is obviously unintelligent and it is obviously not new to constantly frighten everyone with the use of UN Security Council mechanisms and possibilities as such a measure," Zakharova said.
"The outcomes of such forcible operations are very deplorable," she added.
"There is a feeling that sometimes our American colleagues use the UN Security Council for some sort of their PR goals," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
"This is yet another very dangerous trend as the UN Security Council is the highest body of the entire international law system," the Russian diplomat said.
A report was submitted to the UN Security Council on August 24 to provide results of a probe held by experts of the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) into nine chemical attacks in Syria in 2014-2015.
As the experts said, they have been able to gather sufficient information to put the blame on the Syrian government forces for two chemical attacks in the province of Idlib in April 2014 and March 2015.
In the wake of the report, Power stated about the need to take tough measures against those blamed for the chemical attacks. As US media outlets reported, she meant, in particular, the variant of the UN Security Council’s 2013 resolutions, some of which stipulate the need to take measures under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, which envisages possible tough actions against perpetrators, including forcible interference.
