Diplomat: Russia is extremely worried over armed escalation in Syria’s Hasakeh
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has stressed that a decision on introducing a no-fly zone in Syria can be made only in coordination with Damascus and on the basis of international law
MOSCOW, August 25. /TASS/. Russia is extremely worried over the sharp escalation of hostilities in Syria’s Hasakeh and it is urging the parties to the conflict to display restraint, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.
"As far as the situation in Syria’s Hasakeh is concerned, we are extremely worried over the sharp armed escalation in that city in the northwest of Syria between government troops and Kurdish militias," she said. "Russia has been taking proactive steps along different channels with the aim of preventing fratricidal clashes. We are urging the parties to display restraint."
"We are urging the parties to display restraint, wisdom and political conscience and responsibility and to develop the awareness all patriots have only one common enemy - terrorists," Zakharova said. "It is obvious that terrorism is a common threat to all Syrians, who share one goal, that of saving Syria, in which all of its citizens irrespective of their ethnicity or religion should feel comfortable."
No-fly zone
According to Zakharova, a decision on introducing a no-fly zone in Syria can be made only in coordination with Damascus and on the basis of international law.
"After this [the experience of using the no-fly zone in Libya], it has become very hard to speak about no-fly zones and unilateral acts for their creation because we all remember how this recent experience ended," the spokeswoman said.
"As for any actions on the territory of Syria, they must be conducted on the basis of international law, coordination with Damascus and those decisions that were made as part of the International Syria Support Group and passed through the UN Security Council," Zakharova said.
