Putin: Russia to support resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict acceptable for both sides
"We will do everything possible so that Armenia and Azerbaijan reach a compromise acceptable for both sides, so that the peoples of the two countries win from this," Putin said
BAKU, August 8. /TASS/. Russia will do everything possible so that Azerbaijan and Armenia find a compromise on the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh that is acceptable for both sides, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday.
"You mentioned Karabakh. This is really a problem that we got from our Soviet past. I know how acute this issue is for both Azerbaijan and Armenia," Putin said at the meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
"We will do everything possible so that Armenia and Azerbaijan reach a compromise acceptable for both sides, so that the peoples of the two countries win from this, and so that both countries feel that they have resolved this difficult issue in the interests of current and future generations," the Russian president noted.
Ilam Aliyev, in his turn, has thanked his Russian counterpart for his personal contribution to resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis.
"I would like to emphasize Russia’s role in resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh crisis," Aliyev said.
He recalled that the previous meeting held in St. Petersburg in June was devoted to this issue. "I thank you for your personal active involvement in this process," the Azerbaijani president said.
He noted that frequent meetings of the Russian and Azerbaijani leaders give fresh impetus to the development of bilateral relations, "which have long reached the level of strategic partnership and cover nearly all areas."
"We cooperate actively on international platforms, our political dialogue is gaining momentum, while economic ties are becoming stronger," Aliyev said.
