SOCHI, May 12. /TASS/. The Kremlin agrees with the call of Russian Ambassador in Riga Alexander Veshnyakov not to demonize Russia and does not regard it as interference in Latvia’s internal affairs, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Thursday, commenting on summoning of Veshnyakov to the Latvian Foreign Ministry.

"As far as I know, our ambassador has called not to demonize Russia. We can only join this call," the Kremlin official said. According to Peskov, the ambassador’s words can hardly be assessed as any kind of interference in internal affairs and in general, they can hardly be assessed as inconsistent with the diplomatic status."

"Therefore, any demarches in this case against us are hard to explain," the Kremlin official said.

The Russian Embassy in Riga said earlier that Veshnyakov was summoned to the Latvian Foreign Ministry for conversation on May 12.

Latvian Foreign Ministry spokesman Raimonds Jansons told the local information agency LETA on Wednesday that the Russian ambassador was summoned following his interview with the local newspaper Vesti Nedeli. The summoning of Russia’s Ambassador to Latvia Alexander Veshnyakov to the Latvian Foreign Ministry is connected with the diplomat’s statements on many topics, he said later.

In the interview, the ambassador said, in particular, that Latvia and a number of other Western countries deliberately demonize Russia. "The aim is to weaken Russia. For that, apparently, all means are justified, including open propaganda. There’s no need to go far to find examples: it’s a recent film by BBC and Latvian-produced film General Plan," he said.
