The Hague district court ruled earlier on Wednesday that Russia is not obliged to pay $50 billion in compensation to former shareholders of the Russian oil major Yukos

MOSCOW, April 20. /TASS/. The decision of a Dutch court to overturn an earlier ruling obliging Russia to pay $50 billion to former Yukos shareholders should not be politicized, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

"We are speaking about judicial proceedings, I would by no means politicize it," he said in reply to reporters’ queries. "We intend to continue consistently defending Russia’s interests within the framework of legal trials," he went on.

"The Russian side, Russian lawyers provided rather well substantiated evidence and consistent arguments that we had not ratified this very (energy) charter," he said.

Peskov also said this precedent would not change Russia’s attitude to international law. "We respect international law, Russia is participant in the international legal framework," the spokesman said. "When we see this or that decision unfair - we say this, and we welcome decisions when we see them fair," he said.

The Hague district court ruled earlier on Wednesday that Russia is not obliged to pay $50 billion in compensation to former shareholders of the Russian oil major Yukos.

The court found void six arbitration resolutions (three intermediate and three final ones) made by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague.

Under the final resolutions Russia was expected to pay a compensation of $50 billion to three former YUKOS shareholders.
