Russia concerned over US Prompt Global Strike concept — Russian diplomat
Russia's NATO envoy pointed out there's "a clear-cut danger for strategic stability"
NEW YORK, February 15. /TASS/. Russia is concerned over the US concept of the Prompt Global Strike and the threat of space militarization, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic alliance Alexander Grushko said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
"Our analysis shows there is a clear-cut danger for strategic stability," Grushko said.
"For many years we were told missile defense in Europe was needed to address the nuclear threat from Iran. The nuclear program is over. So there is no need for any [missile defense] sites in Europe," he said.
"Secondly, we are also looking at not only what is deployed in Europe but also looking at the United States’ ability to deploy from the United States. We are looking at [US] sea-based capabilities that are being deployed now in the Mediterranean, at Rota [Spain]…But also this is the part of a more complex strategic stability arithmetic," Grushko said.
"We should add issues like prompt global strike. This is very dangerous development in military terms for strategic stability. We have to look at the weaponization of space. We are trying to convince our partners to engage seriously in negotiations on non-deployment of military assets in space. This is the complexity," he said.
