It is understandable that this is a short-sighted and dangerous line posing a threat to global security, Alexei Borodavkin said

MOSCOW, February 10. /TASS/. The US efforts to deploy advanced weapons in outer space are a short-sighted and dangerous policy posing a threat to global security, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva Alexei Borodavkin told TASS on Wednesday.

"The issues of armament control relate to the traditional agenda of the permanent mission because Russia is one of the most influential members of the Geneva Conference on Disarmament," the Russian envoy said.

"As part of this forum, we are seeking together with Chinese partners the commencement of talks on a draft treaty on preventing the placement of weapons in outer space. This treaty would help prevent an arms race in a new sphere and would undoubtedly strengthen global strategic stability," Borodavkin said.

This approach is supported by an overwhelming majority of members of the Conference on Disarmament, the envoy said. "Unfortunately, the United States and its allies make an exception as they probably hope to use their ‘technological supremacy’ for the purpose of getting military advantages by deploying the newest armament systems in outer space and thus supporting their claims to military dominance," the Russian diplomat said.

"It is understandable that this is a short-sighted and dangerous line posing a threat to global security. We expect that under the impact of our arguments, which are supported by single-minded states, Washington will after all realize the need to adjust its position and join the efforts for elaborating the treaty at the Disarmament Conference on the prevention of the placement of weapons in outer space," the Russian diplomat said.
