Russia may host summit to mark 20 years of partnership with ASEAN — Lavrov

MOSCOW, October 5. /TASS/. Russia and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) may hold a summit in Russian territory to mark 20 years of partnership, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.

Speaking after talks with Laos’ Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, Lavrov thanked the Lao leadership for actively supporting "the idea of worthily celebrating the 20th anniversary of partnership between Russia and ASEAN".

"We are considering the possibility of holding a special summit on the occasion in the Russian Federation. We hope to agree on all details in the near future," he said.

ASEAN is an international political and economic organisation founded in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar (Burma) and Vietnam.
