Senior Russian diplomat highlights importance of cooperation between UN, CSTO
"Dialogue between the organizations is aimed at boosting concerted efforts in the fight against terrorism, separatism, extremism, transborder organized crime, and illegal drug trafficking," Kirill Logvinov said
MOSCOW, November 5. /TASS/. Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department for International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, highlighted the importance of cooperation between the United Nations and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in combating extremism, transborder organized crime and illegal drug trafficking that affect multiple countries.
"We attach great importance to the UN’s cooperation with the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization - TASS) and the CSTO based on corresponding biennial resolutions of the UN General Assembly," the diplomat noted. "Dialogue between the organizations is aimed at boosting concerted efforts in the fight against terrorism, separatism, extremism, transborder organized crime, and illegal drug trafficking. This is of paramount importance in the context of fighting the acutest and multi-dimensional challenges faced by most countries globally," he argued.
Commenting on work of the Group of Friends (GOF) in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, Logvinov said it emphasizes the importance of preserving the intergovernmental essence of the global organization in its political declarations, statements and other documents. "With support from GOF member states, Russian initiatives on countering colonialism and unilateral coercive measures were fixed in decisions of the UN General Assembly on establishing corresponding international days. This experience shows how coordination with like-minded partners helps promote issues that matter to a wide number of countries in the broader UN agenda," he concluded.
