Department Director Kirill Logvinov said the proposal stays relevant because of numerous violations committed by the US as the current host country of the headquarters

MOSCOW, November 4. /TASS/. Moscow’s proposal to relocate the UN headquarters to Sochi remains on the table, considering numerous violations committed by the United States as the current host country of the headquarters, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s International Organizations Department Director Kirill Logvinov said in an interview with TASS.

"The key aspect of this fundamental issue is ensuring that the host country complies with the international obligations it has undertaken. That said, the proposal put forward by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov a year ago in New York to consider relocating the headquarters to Sochi remains on the table," he said.

Although relocating the UN headquarters from the United States to another country is theoretically possible, with "well-known grievances held by many member states against the United States as the host country of the world organization’s headquarters" in place, there is no realistic "prospect of such an initiative being put forward in New York at this stage," Logvinov noted.

"First, the new location must meet a wide range of criteria that determine the suitability of a site for hosting the central bodies of a global organization in terms of infrastructure development, transport accessibility, and security. Second, such a relocation would entail enormous financial costs, and it is highly unlikely that anyone would take such a step under the current circumstances. Therefore, I believe no one has any interest in an unjustified ‘resettlement of peoples’," he concluded.
