MOSCOW, August 24. /TASS/. German law enforcement bodies are quietly but seriously examining a potential "Ukrainian link" in the recent drone incident in Leipzig, the press service of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said.

At the same time, Kiev hoped the media fallout from the Leipzig drone incident would indicate Russian involvement instead.

TASS has compiled the key remarks from the SVR.

German investigation

- According to information obtained by SVR, "law enforcement agencies of the Federal Republic of Germany, as is typical of professionals, are examining various versions of the drone incident."

- The possibility of a "Ukrainian trace" is being seriously considered, though not publicly acknowledged.

- The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service questioned whether the German authorities have the political will "to draw impartial conclusions and officially announce them."

Kiev’s plans

- Kiev hoped media coverage of the situation with the drone carrying explosives at Leipzig Airport would point to "Moscow’s hand": "According to information received by the SVR, Kiev is quite satisfied with the media and political effect of the developments surrounding the drone carrying explosives, which was found in the parking lot of a Ukrainian transport aircraft at the German Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 5."

- Without even waiting for the preliminary results of the investigation, German politicians of all stripes, followed by the European media, issued an unequivocal verdict: 'Moscow’s hand has reached' the major airport on German soil, which is also used for military purposes."

- The Kiev government believes that the Leipzig drone incident has galvanized Europe with fresh evidence of Russia’s "hostility": "Kiev is triumphant, viewing the operation as a success, and believing have shaken Europe with fresh 'evidence of Russia’s aggressive and hostile policies.'"

- Moreover, Ukraine believes that its actions have "spurred [Europe] to deplete its military stockpiles for the sake of the Kiev regime’s survival. "And, maybe, another objective will be achieved as well, which is to weaken public support for German opposition forces, pursuing a pragmatic approach toward Russia."

Airport incident

- An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fitted with an improvised explosive device was discovered on the tarmac at Leipzig/Halle Airport at around 9:40 p.m. GMT on August 4, right next to Ukraine’s An cargo aircraft.

- The Ukrainian freighter was reportedly transporting ammunition, according to reports by the NDR and WDR broadcasters and the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

- The Bild newspaper wrote, citing security sources, that the drone had been custom-built by professionals and remained invisible to standard air defense systems.

- The explosive device attached to the drone was defused on August 5 through a controlled detonation on the airport’s southern runway apron.

- German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said he considered the drone incident a "hybrid warfare scenario."

- German investigators are not ruling out the possibility that Ukraine may have conducted a false-flag operation at Leipzig/Halle Airport in order to discredit Russia, the Die Zeit newspaper wrote citing its own sources.

- In the wake of the incident, the Russian embassy in Germany expressed its concerns about a new wave of anti-Russian hysteria in Germany.

- On August 12, the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland media group reported citing a spokesman for the German defense ministry that there have been several hundreds of sightings of unidentified UAVs over the country’s military sites.
