Rubio’s 'disingenuous' statements, seeking clarity from US: Lavrov’s statements

According to the Russian top diplomat, it is necessary to "clarify" the situation regarding the US role in settling the Ukraine conflict

MOSCOW, June 26. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called for clarity regarding what role Washington plans to play in the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s statements about the outcomes of the Anchorage summit.

He noted that Rubio stating that no agreement was reached on a Ukraine settlement at the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Anchorage "is a bit disingenuous."

TASS has compiled the key statements of the Russian Foreign Minister.

Anchorage agreements

- Rubio’s claim that no agreement was reached on a Ukraine settlement at the meeting between Russian and US Presidents in Anchorage is dubious: "When my counterpart Marco Rubio says that there were only proposals, but no agreement in Alaska, I have to ask the question: what do we mean by an agreement."

- In Alaska, the US made proposals to the Russian side, and it accepted: "The fact remains, US proposals were discussed and accepted by the Russian side in Alaska."

- It is "a bit disingenuous" for Rubio to say that there was no agreement in Anchorage: "If one side, in this case the US, put its proposals for a settlement on the table, for how to approach this crisis, and the other side agreed with these proposals, then saying there was no agreement is a bit disingenuous."

US mediation in Ukraine settlement

- It is necessary to "clarify" the situation regarding the US role in settling the Ukraine conflict.

- Washington’s statements about wanting to play a constructive role in Ukraine sound like a bid for mediation: "The United States says now that it is interested in playing a constructive role, uniting the parties. That already sounds like a bid for mediation.".
