Russian Security Council highlights political bias of OPCW technical mission in Syria

According to the statement, the Russian Permanent Mission to the OPCW has repeatedly pointed out that the secretariat has lost its independence

MOSCOW, April 29. /TASS/. The technical mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in Syria is becoming increasingly ineffective at detecting genuine threats due to its political bias, the Russian Security Council said in a statement on chemical weapons as a geopolitical tool.

"By 2026, the situation regarding Syria's chemical dossier remains unresolved. The OPCW's technical mission in Syria, primarily funded through UK contributions, continues its operations, but its effectiveness in identifying real threats is virtually nonexistent. The problem is not due to new findings, but rather the organization's political bias. The Russian Permanent Mission to the OPCW has repeatedly stated that the secretariat has lost its independence and is now aligned with the collective West," the Council said.

Damascus joined the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in 2013. "Under the Russian-US framework agreement of September 14, 2013, Syria undertook unprecedented obligations to remove and destroy its arsenals. In terms of formal compliance with these obligations, the Syrian government settled this matter long ago," the Council added.
