Russia warns Netherlands pressure on journalists will draw response — Foreign Ministry
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted that the journalist had waited for the application to be processed for nearly a year before the decision not to extend it was made
MOSCOW, April 1. /TASS/. Moscow warned Amsterdam that pressure on Russian journalists will not go unanswered, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing.
The diplomat addressed the Dutch authorities' refusal to extend a residence permit for a Russian journalist.
"The Russian side warned the Hague [the Dutch authorities] from the very beginning, through repeated contacts with the kingdom's embassy leadership in Moscow, that such methods of pressure on representatives of Russian media will not go unanswered," she said.
The diplomat noted that the journalist had waited for the application to be processed for nearly a year before the decision not to extend it was made. "This restricted the Russian journalist’s ability to travel," she added.
The journalist also faced significant delays in the appeals process and the blocking of her bank accounts. "Border officials pulled the Russian journalist from the line during passport control while departing for Moscow and escorted her to an interrogation room, where they detained her for about half an hour. This raises concerns about the protection of journalists, freedom of speech, and human rights," Zakharova noted.
