Russia has yet to formulate its position on Board of Peace — Kremlin
Dmitry Peskov noted that the opinion of countries that are friendly to Russia is taken into account
MOSCOW, February 26. /TASS/. The Russian Foreign Ministry has yet to finalize Moscow’s position regarding the US-led Board of Peace and its potential participation in it, taking the opinion of countries that are friendly to Russia into account, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a news briefing.
"The Foreign Ministry is still formulating its position," Peskov said as he described the positions taken by a number of countries, including those that are friendly to Russia, on the newly established body as "quite equivocal." "They all are being taken into account," he added.
On January 22, 19 countries signed the Charter of the Board of Peace on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The body, originally established based on an agreement between Israel and the radical Palestinian movement Hamas to govern the Gaza Strip, is also supposed to prevent and resolve conflicts in other regions.
President Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia is ready to invest in the Board as he insisted that the body should primarily operate to support the Palestinian people and Gaza reconstruction.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, responsible for finalizing Moscow’s position about it, has emphasized to TASS that the current charter and mandate of the Board of Peace raise questions as they imply a possible "replacement" for the existing UN bodies in a number of parameters. Many nations that are friendly to Russia have voiced similar concerns.
