Sergey Shoigu said the recent general parliamentary elections in Myanmar were held on a high note

MOSCOW, February 3. /TASS/. Parliamentary elections in Myanmar were held on a high note, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu said in an interview with TASS, adding that the republic's authorities are committed to close cooperation with the Russian side.

"The general parliamentary elections in Myanmar, which ended on January 25 and for which the authorities had been carefully preparing for several years, were truly held on a high note. Patriotic forces focused on national reconciliation and stabilization of the domestic political situation, as well as economic development in close cooperation with foreign partners, including Russia, of course, received an absolute majority in the legislative body," Shoigu said following his working visit to Myanmar.

Earlier, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won a majority of seats in Myanmar’s Assembly of the Union (parliament) following the parliamentary elections. Due to the aftermath of the civil conflict that erupted following the military coup on February 1, 2021, the election process was organized in 265 of the republic’s 330 districts. The elections were divided into three stages, held on December 28, January 11, and January 25. More than 5,000 candidates from 57 political parties participated, six of which were represented in the national vote, while the rest were contested within a single region or state.
