Parliaments of India, Russia have potential to develop ties — head of committee
"Just as you have meetings of presidents and prime ministers, you have meetings of foreign ministers, you can also have meetings of parliamentarians," Shashi Tharoor noted
NEW DELHI, April 2. /TASS/. The parliaments of India and Russia have potential to develop ties, including through meetings of parliamentarians of the two countries, Shashi Tharoor, Chairman of the Committee on external affairs of Lok Sabha (low house of the parliament) told TASS.
"Certainly, it is possible to do it [cooperation development between parliamentarians] because we have good relations with Russia. And therefore, for the parliamentarians to meet is one more dimension. And that's something that's always welcome," he said.
"Just as you have meetings of presidents and prime ministers, you have meetings of foreign ministers, you can also have meetings of parliamentarians. It's the same logic. It's creating connections at all levels of our governing system," Tharoor noted.
In early February, Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma, low house of the Russian parliament, made an official visit to India. The State Duma delegation visited New Delhi and Mumbai. Following the trip, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla called the meetings with Russian parliamentarians productive. According to him, India and Russia have special and dynamic relations in various areas, from defense and energy to culture and people-to-people ties, and both parliaments play a special role in building these ties.
