Top Russian, Chinese diplomats discuss prospects for settling Ukrainian crisis

MOSCOW, April 1. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi have exchanged opinions about how to settle the Ukrainian crisis during talks in Moscow, noting the need to eliminate the conflict’s root causes.

According to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry, "the sides have exchanged opinions with regard to the prospects of settling the Ukrainian crisis." "They emphasized the need to eliminate the conflict’s root causes as the foundation for firm peace agreements," the statement noted.

The Russian foreign policy agency noted that during the talks, the sides exchanged opinions on the schedule of bilateral interaction at the high and highest levels as well as on certain issues of practical and humanitarian cooperation.

Thus, on international subjects, the two top diplomats emphasized the importance of bolstering coordination within the framework of the UN, SCO, BRICS, G20, APEC and other multilateral mechanisms and forums. They further discussed the issue of new security risks in the Asia-Pacific region.

Wang and Lavrov also touched on certain "regional topics," those being the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Iran’s nuclear program, the state of affairs in Central Asia, and the prospects for shaping a new security structure in Eurasia amid the "stagnation of Euro-Atlantic mechanisms."

"The talks were held in a friendly and open atmosphere, typical of Sino-Russian ties. Identical or close positions on the main issues of bilateral interaction and the global agenda were emphasized which fully corresponds to the high spirit of strategic partnership between Russia and China," the Russian Foreign Ministry concluded.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has welcomed Wang’s visit to Russia, giving high marks to the state of Russian-Chinese relations which continue to dynamically develop under increasingly turbulent conditions and indicating readiness for the further boosting of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction with China.
