Violence against protestors in Belgrade unacceptable — Russian envoy
"Our position is that it is unacceptable to resort to violence, composure is necessary," Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko said
MOSCOW, March 17. /TASS/. Violence against those protesting in Belgrade is unacceptable, and any differences must be resolved through peaceful means, Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko told the Rossiya-24 TV channel.
"Our position is that it is unacceptable to resort to violence, composure is necessary, and all demands should be resolved through peaceful means, through cooperation with the authorities," the diplomat said.
"President [of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic] maintains his position, and he will continue to seek dialogue. A part of the student society has agreed to engage in it and is going to return to studying, which is progress in itself," the envoy added.
Protests of various intensity have been taking place in Serbia since November 2024, when a canopy collapsed at a railway station in the country’s second-largest city, Novi Sad, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people. The protestors blame the country’s authorities for the tragedy. Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin told TASS with regard to the developments in the Balkan republic that "an attempt to organize a ‘color revolution’ in Serbia" was being "made by Western special services."
