Russian senator reiterates impossibility of death penalty under current constitution
"The position of Russia’s Constitutional Court on this issue has also remained the same," Andrey Klishas said
MOSCOW, February 26. /TASS/. The authorities' position on the reinstatement of the death penalty in Russia remains the same: it is unfeasible under the existing Russian Constitution, Andrey Klishas, chairman of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation and Statehood in the upper house Federation Council, told TASS.
Earlier, the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center published the results of a poll on the death penalty in Russia. According to it, one in two Russians polled (49%) supports the reintroduction of the death penalty.
"The position on the restoration of the death penalty has not changed. This is unachievable under the current constitution. The position of Russia’s Constitutional Court on this issue has also remained the same," the senator said.
Russian Constitutional Court Chairman Valery Zorkin said earlier that the death penalty could be reinstated in Russia only if a new constitution was adopted.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the end of 2024 that the authorities would not introduce the death penalty even under the conditions of the special military operation, despite the fact that "a significant number of citizens and political figures are constantly raising this issue." The head of state pointed out that, on the contrary, the Russian authorities are taking a number of decisions to increase the humanity of justice.
