Putin asks that Russian brands be given advantages when competitors return
The president stressed that this should be done in accordance with the requirements of the World Trade Organization
MOSCOW, February 21. /TASS/. Russia should give advantages to local producers in case foreign brands return to the Russian market, but this should be done in accordance with the requirements of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the plenary session of the Future Technologies Forum.
"I ask the government to consider how we can regulate the interaction between our companies and those of our competitors in order to give certain advantages to local producers. Yes, within the framework of the WTO. But nevertheless, certain difficulties have been created for us and we can regulate accordingly the return of those who want to return to our market by creating and giving advantages to our own producers. It has to be done subtly, carefully. But it must be done," he said.
Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told TASS earlier that foreign companies will be allowed to return to Russia only if it benefits the country. "The return of foreign companies and investors to Russia will be possible only on terms that are favorable for us. We must act strictly based on our national interest. Many vacant niches have already been taken by Russian producers or partners from friendly countries; it is important to take this into account," Novak stressed.
"Work to achieve technological sovereignty will continue even in case of a change in external circumstances. The availability of domestically-produced advanced technologies in critical areas is important for the further successful development of Russia’s leading industries," he added.
