Senior Russian MP hopes that Trump really wants peace in Ukraine
"Such an achievement would serve his interests as the incoming US president," Leonid Slutsky noted
MOSCOW, December 23. /TASS/. Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the international affairs committee in Russia’s State Duma and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), expressed optimism that former US President Donald Trump genuinely aims to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
"I believe that he truly desires an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Such an achievement would serve his interests as the incoming US president. The question remains: who will he negotiate with, and which parties are legitimate? A non-standard approach will be required," Slutsky told reporters.
"However, those committed to peace will find a way to engage in such dialogue, provided their intentions are sincere. We must remain hopeful and continue working toward a resolution," he emphasized.
During his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly vowed to address the conflict in Ukraine before taking office, though he avoided specifying how. According to Reuters, citing unnamed sources, Trump is evaluating three potential settlement plans, none of which involve Ukraine’s immediate entry into NATO.
At a high-level meeting with Russian foreign ministry officials in mid-June, Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined Moscow's preconditions for resolving the conflict. These included Ukraine withdrawing its forces from Donbass and Novorossia, abandoning aspirations to join NATO, and committing to a non-bloc, non-nuclear status. Moscow also demanded the removal of all Western-imposed sanctions.
