Russia’s top diplomat urges Ukraine initiatives' authors to adhere to UN Charter
Sergey Lavrov noted that Ukraine had violated the rights of its Russian-speaking residents and banned the Russian language, with the ban on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church
MOSCOW, November 29. /TASS/. Russia urges all authors of peace initiatives regarding the Ukrainian crisis to comply with the guidelines of the UN Charter, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at an ambassadorial roundtable on the settlement of the Ukraine conflict.
"When our friends generously put forward initiatives for conflict resolution based on international law and the UN Charter, we urge them to follow not just one particular principle of the United Nations Charter, but all of them in their entirety and interconnection. Only then will it be fair and will show everyone that we truly want to address the root cause of this conflict," he said.
The Russian foreign minister noted that Ukraine had violated the rights of its Russian-speaking residents and banned the Russian language, with the ban on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He added that the West "prioritizes human rights, with or without justification, in any other situation, but is completely silent here."
Russia’s top diplomat recalled China’s Global Security Initiative, which, according to him, is dedicated to principles that must be followed in approaching any conflict. One of those principles is focused on identifying and eliminating the underlying causes of conflict, he noted.
"I call for full recognition of this wise demand by the Global Security Initiative, which was put forward by Chinese President [Xi Jinping]. Naturally, we believe that it is necessary to strictly adhere to international law in any situation," the minister concluded.
