Kremlin considers militants' attack on Aleppo encroachment on Syria's sovereignty
"We urge Syria’s authorities to reassert control and restore constitutional order as soon as possible," Dmitry Peskov stressed
MOSCOW, November 29. /TASS/. The Kremlin considers the attack by armed groups on the Damascus-controlled city of Aleppo an encroachment on Syria's sovereignty and supports the quickest possible establishment of constitutional order in the region, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated at a press briefing.
"Of course, this is a violation of Syria's sovereignty in this region," Peskov stated. "We urge Syria’s authorities to reassert control and restore constitutional order as soon as possible," the Kremlin spokesman added.
On November 27, the extremist group Jabhat al-Nusra (banned in Russia) and radical groups allied with it came dangerously close to Aleppo, which was liberated from illegal armed groups in 2016, and seized several strategic positions 7-10 km from the city.
The government forces successfully held back the militants' advance in several frontline areas near Aleppo, inflicting several hundred casualties on the enemy.
