Moscow to tighten questionnaire filling rules for UK diplomats
"The Russian side strongly advises UK nationals to provide exclusively accurate information about their past when submitting visa applications," the statement reads
MOSCOW, November 26. /TASS/. Moscow will tighten the requirements that UK embassy diplomats follow when filling out questionnaires, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement following the summoning of UK Ambassador Nigel Casey.
"Given the exposed case of intentionally filing false information, requirements for filling out questionnaires will be tightened for UK embassy diplomatic staff," the ministry said. "The Russian side strongly advises UK nationals to provide exclusively accurate information about their past when submitting visa applications."
According to the statement, a strong protest was issued to the British envoy over the submission of false information by British embassy employee Edward Wilkes as he was entering the country.
"At the same time, competent Russian agencies obtained information proving that said employee is a member of British special services, while signs were detected that he conducted intelligence and subversive work on the territory of our country," the ministry said.
Casey was told at the ministry that Moscow won’t tolerate the activities of undeclared agents of British special services in Russia.
"An uncompromising policy in this matter will be formulated in accordance with the national security interests of the Russian Federation. Furthermore, if London chooses to escalate the situation, Russia will immediately give a tit-for-tat response," the ministry said.
The Russian Federal Security Service earlier announced that Wilkes was stripped of his diplomatic accreditation and ordered to leave the country within two weeks. He succeeded one of the UK intelligence officers that had worked at the embassy before they had been expelled in August, according to the agency.
