US 'stains' reputation by vetoing UNSC resolution on Middle East — Russian diplomat
Russia "will continue insisting on the most resolute measures to stop the bloodshed in Gaza," Dmitry Polyansky added
UNITED NATIONS, November 25. /TASS/. By vetoing the UN Security Council resolution on settling the situation in the Middle East, the US has isolated itself from the entire world, Russian First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky said.
"After vetoing the document drafted by the ten non-permanent members, the United States has found itself in total international isolation. Its approaches are shared neither by the Middle East nor by Security Council members nor the overwhelming majority of UN member states. Washington’s course toward blocking the UN Security Council’s work on the Middle East track will be a stain on the reputation of the outgoing US administration it will never be able to wash off," he stressed.
Russia "will continue insisting on the most resolute measures to stop the bloodshed in Gaza," he said. "We are ready for cooperation on this matter with all rational and responsible members of the Security Council, as well as for work within the UN General Assembly."
On November 20, the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, for the fifth time since October 2023. The United States also objected to admitting Palestine as a full-fledged UN member.
Tensions flared up again in the Middle East on October 7 after militants from the Gaza Strip-based radical Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise incursion on Israeli territory, killing many Israeli kibbutz residents living near the Gaza border and abducting more than 240 Israelis, including women, children and the elderly. Israel declared a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and launched a ground operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Israel is also delivering strikes on certain areas in Syria and Lebanon.
