Russia hopes for sensible approach by new US administration to talks on Korean Peninsula

MOSCOW, November 5. /TASS/. Russia hopes that the new US administration will show common sense in settling the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko told TASS.

"We always hope for the best. For sensible and reasonable attitude by the US administration and its allies who were previously involved in six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula," he said, replying to a question as to whether Moscow hopes to resume talks on the matter following the US presidential election.

In January 2003, North Korea announced its final withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which it had been party to since 1985. Six-party talks on resolving the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula began in August 2003, involving Russia, the US, China, Japan and the two Koreas. A total of six rounds of talks took place before Pyongyang stated in April 2009 that it would be pointless to continue the negotiations.

About US election

The United States is holding its presidential election on November 5. The Democratic Party was initially expected to be represented by incumbent President Joe Biden. However, following a poor performance in the June debate with former President Donald Trump, Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who was later formally nominated as the party’s presidential candidate at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
